Agro-Industries

The agricultural sector represents 4% of the national economy.  Sugar cane cultivation and sugar production remain the main activities in this sector.  The sugar industry which has a history of more than 300 years has today been transformed into a cane cluster engaged in production of refined and special sugar, molasses, ethanol and energy through biomass.

With food security taking unprecedented importance, Government of Mauritius has identified 4 strategic crops namely Potato, Onion, Garlic and Banana for the country.  Other projects include animal welfare, dairy and rice production.  Also, Mauritius has embarked in a regional partnership initiative to develop agricultural projects using modern technology.
